"In September Bell Beijing ran a 3-day management workshop for ABB China on the theme of "Assertiveness: communicating effectively in the intercultural environment". ABB management was concerned that many of their Chinese managers -- even though they had good ideas and relevant experience -- were too quiet in international meetings with foreigners present. "They won't speak up... this is not acceptable because they are managers and they must contribute", the company told us. A lack of English language skills was not the real problem. The real problem had to do with cultural attitudes and expectations. Where Western managers favor a proactive approach to work and meeting participation, and expect people to speak up, Chinese are more prudent, silent and watchful particularly when dealing with foreigners. The 3-day workshop was organized around a series of activities that required participants to be proactive and assertive, and involving three management trainers. This program proved to be highly successful."
